Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are classified into three levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. The main difference between the three levels is the speed at which they can charge an EV.
Level 1 charging stations are the slowest and most common type of charger. They use a standard 120-volt AC outlet, the same type of outlet used for household appliances. Level 1 chargers can typically add 3-5 miles of range per hour of charging.
Level 2 charging stations are faster than Level 1 chargers and use a 240-volt AC outlet, the same type of outlet used for electric dryers and ovens. Level 2 chargers can typically add 20-30 miles of range per hour of charging.
Level 3 charging stations are the fastest type of charger and use direct current (DC) to charge an EV’s battery. Level 3 chargers can typically add 100-200 miles of range per hour of charging.
Here is a table that summarizes the key differences between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charging stations:
| Feature | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 120V AC | 240V AC | 400V or 800V DC |
| Power | 1.4 kW | 3.2-19.2 kW | 50-400 kW |
| Charging speed | 3-5 miles per hour | 20-30 miles per hour | 100-200 miles per hour |
| Cost | Least expensive | More expensive than Level 1 | Most expensive |
| Availability | Most common | Less common than Level 1 | Least common |
Which level of charging station is right for you?
The best charging station for you will depend on your needs and driving habits. If you have a short commute and can charge your EV at home overnight, a Level 1 charger may be sufficient. If you have a longer commute or need to charge your EV more quickly, a Level 2 charger is a good option. Level 3 chargers are best for long-distance road trips or if you need to charge your EV quickly in a pinch.
Keep in mind that not all EVs are compatible with all levels of charging stations. Be sure to check your EV’s owner’s manual to see which charging levels your car supports.
