This past Friday afternoon, we had the absolute pleasure of spending time with one of our winners: Courtney Stapleton, a dedicated 1st Grade Teacher at the Milan Village School. Courtney’s journey in education is a inspiring story of devotion to community and student growth. Raised in central New Hampshire, Courtney earned her Elementary Education degree from Roanoke College in Virginia. When considering where to launch her career, she felt drawn back home to New Hampshire. Seeking a teaching environment where she could truly connect with her students, she returned north and began her professional path in Gilmanton, NH. There, she spent half the year doing substitute teaching before pivoting halfway through the year to serve as a specialized Math and Reading teacher. Following that initial experience, Courtney spent five years at the Lancaster School before ultimately finding her true educational home at the Milan Village School, where she has been nurturing 1st graders for the past eight years. Today, Courtney leads a vibrant class of 14 first graders in a school that serves 122 students in total. For Courtney, the small size of the Milan Village School is one of its greatest strengths. The intimate environment allows every teacher to form close, meaningful connections with their students, ensuring that one-on-one teaching makes a deep impact. When asked about what drives her passion for teaching, Courtney’s eyes light up: “I love it when they get what we are working on... that is when they soar. There is a significant change in their confidence and mindset. Those smiles on their faces get bigger and bigger. I love how spunky they are. Being a part of their journey really makes me happy. I love what I do.” Courtney also credits much of her success to the strong partnership between the school and local families. “It really makes my job easier when I know I have their support with what I am doing,” she shared. “The parents are trusting me to work with their children and help them to advance.” Balancing classroom responsibilities with family life brings its own unique set of rewards and challenges. As a "teacher mom," Courtney has actually taught her own children in her classroom. “I told them there is separation when I am at school. I am their teacher... Mrs. Stapleton. As soon as school is over, I am their Mom. My kids have done a great job with that, but sometimes they need reminding. Overall, I am so glad that I get to teach my children.” That sense of family extends throughout the entire Milan Village School building. Courtney speaks with deep gratitude about the culture created by her leadership and colleagues. “It is over the top,” she said regarding administration support. “They support all of the teachers very well and we are lucky to have them on our team. Not only is there administrative support but the support from my fellow teachers is also off the charts. We want everyone to succeed.” That supportive environment fuels an incredibly creative, hands-on learning culture. Knowing he loved motorcycles and dirt bikes, Makayla got creative: she pressed letter patterns into Play-Doh and challenged him to trace the letters using toy Matchbox dirt bikes. It was an instant "WOW moment." Seeing the spark in his eyes as he made the connection reminded her exactly why creative, hands-on teaching matters so much. Of course, teaching also comes with real challenges. Makayla spoke candidly about helping students catch up on foundational skills, as well as managing the everyday behavioral interruptions that can take away from valuable instructional time but her commitment never wavers: "It is hard and I feel so bad but we will not give up on them. We will continue to brainstorm how we can overcome these challenges." After our conversations with Kelsey and her husband Will on Saturday, we were so excited to tell Kelsey's story and all she does...Let's get into it. At Littleton Chevrolet, supporting the exceptional educators who shape the young minds of our North Country youth is one of our most rewarding community initiatives. Through our annual Teacher Giveaway, we have the privilege of sitting down with passionate teachers who bring energy, vision and heart to their classrooms every single day. On Saturday, our General Manager, Duane Coute, had the pleasure of spending time with another one of our remarkable winners: Kelsey Wright, a dedicated 2nd Grade Teacher at Heartwood Public Charter School in Jefferson, NH, who came by with her husband to share her journey, her love for teaching and her unique vision for primary education. Kelsey’s career in education began after graduating from high school in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Driven by a desire to make a difference in children’s lives, she pursued her higher education at Plymouth State University, graduating in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She kicked off her teaching career at Berlin Elementary, where she taught Kindergarten for two years. However, when she heard whispers about a new educational concept taking root in the region...Heartwood Public Charter School...she felt called to take a leap of faith. Though the school was not yet in existence, Kelsey applied, earned the job and joined a pioneering effort. When Heartwood opened its doors, it did so with flying colors, instantly becoming an incredible asset to the Jefferson community. Heartwood is a nature-based charter school, built around the philosophy that outdoor exploration is fundamental to childhood development. Every single day, students spend a full hour outside...climbing trees, constructing forts and experimenting in a custom mud kitchen (because who doesn’t love a well-crafted mud pie?). Beyond outdoor play, science and community integration form the bedrock of their curriculum. Kelsey’s students actively participate in hands-on stewardship projects, such as building and maintaining a local food pantry. Gathering community donations gives the young learners a profound sense of civic pride and generosity. Furthermore, by visiting local farms and practicing sustainable agriculture, the students develop a deep understanding of where their food comes from and how to care for the environment for future generations. In an age dominated by screens, Heartwood’s nature-centric model offers a refreshing balance. As Kelsey explained, the school maintains a low-tech environment from Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. It isn't until 3rd Grade that Chromebooks are introduced for research and typing practice and the school holds a strict policy that a student’s first formal paper must be written traditionally using pencil and paper. With just 12 students in Kelsey’s 2nd Grade class, the small group size creates the perfect setting for individualized instruction and strong teacher-student bonds. Kelsey’s passion and innovative approach have not gone unnoticed. Last year, she was named a Semi-Finalist for New Hampshire Teacher of the Year. To achieve this prestigious honor, community members and parents must submit glowing recommendation letters, participate in rigorous evaluation rounds with the NH Education Commissioner and his staff and stand out among top educators state-wide until the group is narrowed down to just nine finalists. It is an extraordinary accomplishment and we at Littleton Chevrolet could not be prouder to see her talent recognized at the highest state level. When asked what she loves most about her profession, Kelsey’s enthusiasm is contagious. “I love everything,” she shared. “I love being creative every day and watching my students be creative as well. They want to learn on their own and it is such a joy. I want to continue to be that safe person for them. Teaching is fun...we are not rigid at Heartwood. Things flow and we are allowed to flow. Tying their interests into learning is a win-win for all of us.” Kelsey notes that she feels most like her true self when she is standing in front of her class. She credits much of her happiness to the tight-knit network of educators surrounding her, stating, “We have a great community with my fellow teachers and close friends. We help each other.” This school year marks a special milestone for Kelsey. When she first started at Heartwood, she taught Kindergarten, then looped up to 1st Grade with the same cohort and followed them once more into 2nd Grade. This year is her first time passing that cherished group along to the next grade and welcoming a completely new class. “It was so cool to follow those kids' journeys,” Kelsey reflected. “They are in good hands.” Even the most dedicated teachers face challenges and for Kelsey, the primary struggle is personal burnout. “I give so much every day and week and by the end of the day, I need to work on giving back to myself,” she admitted candidly. To recharge her battery, she makes time to step back, read a good book, paint watercolors or simply relax by the fire with her husband and dogs ensuring she is in a healthy headspace to give her all to her students the next day. That same spirit of grace extends directly to her students. One of Kelsey’s favorite core messages to her class is simple yet powerful: “You do not need to be perfect... just need to do your best.” This empowering mindset allows her 2nd graders to relax, release fear of failure and enjoy the learning process. No matter the need, Melissa is always ready to step up to any challenge.  She has stepped in to teach Music, Middle School Science and Technology whenever called upon, adapting seamlessly to guide her students toward success. When we sat down to talk with her about her long career, her eyes lit up as she shared what fuels her passion day in and day out: "I love when a student gets a concept that we are working on or the task at hand and you have an amazing 'Ah-Ha!' moment.  I love having all the laughs and having fun with the students.  It really makes my day so rewarding." That joy is infectious and her students feel it every single day.  Recently, a new student came up to Melissa to share how happy she was in her new school and how excited she felt to learn, adding, "I only wish that my friends could come here and be as happy as I am." A statement like that speaks volumes.  It is a powerful testament to the transformative work that Melissa and her fellow educators carry out daily.  As Melissa puts it: "Students want to learn and for them to learn effectively, you need to give them an environment to perform." We also asked Melissa about the modern educational landscape and what she would change if she could alter one thing about her day or environment. Her response was both thoughtful and grounded in her dedication to genuine learning.  She pointed directly to the growing over-reliance on artificial intelligence in schoolwork: "There is too much reliability on AI.  It is the easy way out and it is robbing our students of experiencing true creative writing, deep thought processes and overall creativity." While it looks like a cheap and easy DIY win, using those store-bought cans is one of the fastest ways to turn a minor, inexpensive A/C issue into a multi-thousand-dollar repair nightmare. Here is why those "quick-fix" cans cause far more damage than they fix in the long run. 1. You are Blindly Guessing the Pressure Your car’s A/C system doesn't just need refrigerant; it needs an exact, precisely measured amount of it. Modern vehicles hold a remarkably small amount of refrigerant, often measured to the exact ounce. The cheap plastic gauges on DIY cans only measure pressure on the low-pressure side of the system. They give you no reading on the high-pressure side. Without seeing both sides, you are essentially flying blind. The Overfill Disaster: If you add too much refrigerant, you can "hydro-lock" the A/C compressor.
